Bar/ Bat Mitzvah

A Bar/Bat Mitzvah signifies the coming of age for a Jew and being responsible for one’s own actions. A Bat Mitzvah for girls occurs at age 12 and a Bar Mitzvah for boys occurs at age 13. During the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, a child reads from the Torah, chants the weekly prophetic portion, leads services and delivers a talk to the congregation. Preparation for a Bat/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, including Torah lessons typically begins a year before the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Jewish-Outreach provides Torah study lessons and a rabbi for Shabbat service.
